A New Lease On Life!

Magazine cover featuring Mia of The Stanley Steemer Variations (by Mia)

Hi, we’re back! It seems our little 2-year-old video got some CPR around the New Year with a new wave of YouTube views, comments and questions, and now more folks are visiting this blog than ever before!

Here are a few of the most common questions we’ve been asked recently:

Q: Do you work for Stanley Steemer or is this a viral marketing campaign for the company?

A: Contrary to what the conspiracy theorists on Reddit would have you believe, we are not affiliated with the company Stanley Steemer in any way, nor have we received any form of compensation from them.

Q: What is the genre at ______?

A: Here is a breakdown of the genre/style for each segment as we perceived it:

0:00 Original jingle
0:07 Jazz/scat
0:17 1980s big-hair rock
0:30 1950s girl-group
0:39 Opera
0:55 New country
1:07 Latin/salsa
1:20 Electronica/goth/dark wave/WWGD (What would Gaga do?)
1:35 R&B
1:55 Avril/pop-punk

Q: What songs are the various segments based on?

A: Besides the original jingle, only the chorus in the Avril parody is based on an existing song. Any other similarities to existing works are purely coincidental and/or indicative of the genre.

Q: What did you use to film/edit this?

A: This was the most low-budget production ever: one Sony Handycam mounted on a tripod in a bedroom (no green screen; just old-fashioned trickiness and magic), one girl changing outfits/makeup/hair in two whirling-dervish sessions, and one cameraman/key grip who edited the whole thing together in Final Cut Pro. Total DIY. If we can do it, so can you!

Q: I saw the Mia video on Facebook. It had over 8 million views, but now I can’t find it. What happened?

A: Unfortunately, a third party copied and hosted our video on their Facebook page, tagging themselves instead of crediting the authors (us) to boost their ranking. As those who jumped to our aid noted, this was not “sharing” but rather “stealing”; Facebook pulled the video due to copyright infringement.

Q: Will you be making a sequel, or another variations video?

A: So many YouTubers requested or noted genres we missed: rap, hip-hop, dubstep, reggae, heavy metal, death metal, emo, screamo, blues… If we make a sequel, Bulgarian women’s choir will definitely be in there, too. More likely, though, another collaboration would be of a completely different stripe.

Keep the questions and comments coming; we LOVE hearing from you!

Impressive video. Was wondering who provided the background tracks. I guess being in New York it wouldn’t be hard to find great musicians but it still would require score writing and a good sound engineer. Unless this was done electronically. But the instruments sound real.

Thanks, libby, for noticing the difference. This was “written” in the traditional way (vs. finding some beats and being inspired by them). All of the guitars, bass, keyboards, and mandolin were played by us; the drums were mostly programmed. Btw, this was done in Cincinnati, not New York!

I hope to see a sequel from you guys! Either another stanley steemer one but I also think a jingle like the HMS one be good to do variations of!
